Fitness Together Owner Reveals How to Make
Forty and Beyond the Best Years of Your Life!!
By: Camelia Herndon
We hear it all the time, our society is living longer, healthier more exciting lives. Forty is the new twenty.
But, is it really that easy to maintain our youthful appearance into our 40's and beyond? It is harder to lose weight at midlife. Work, motherhood, menopause, a changing metabolism, more aches and pains, can all make it harder, but not impossible. Here are some helpful ideas and tips to help you on the path to a younger you...
First of All, Change Your Mindset
Most of us understand the concept of exercise and eating right. We've had it ingrained in our minds for most of our adult life - which frankly- is a long time now. We've had lots of practice with trying to get fit and it may not be working...so set your mind straight, think of yourself as an active woman, someone who can embrace a healthy lifestyle and lives by its mantra. Start with these simple things:
1. Show up - that's the first step. For the next 21 days, make exercise the priority. Eventually, it will become habit.
2. Evaluate your Lifestle - we can only see what you're doing while you're with us at the gym. The other 23 hours are up to you. Retrain yourself to get rid of the unhealthy habits, think about improving every aspect of your life.
3. Make Appointments - schedule your workouts so there is no chance to miss them. Plan them a week or even a month ahead.
Remember, exercise is a lifestyle, you can't expect to get the results if you don't show up and do the work.
Now, make your exercise and diet routine work for you.
Even after the sluggish metabolism, hormonal shifts and changing body composition set in, cardio, nutrition and strength training are still the primary components of every healthy lifestyle. Try making just some of these changes and see what happens...
Incorporate weight training into your exercise routine. Muscle mass increases the ability to burn calories. For every pound of muscle you drop, you lose the ability to burn 35 to 50 extra calories. So, you have to eat less in order to lose weight...or you can strength train and have a bit more eating freedom - and don't we all want that!!
A tip for successful strength training: Slow down!! Don't let momentum carry you through the exercise, use the muscle to help you lift the weight. (you're less likely to get injured, also). Count about six seconds per rep, and pause at the "top" of your move.
Cardio, Cardio, Cardio...how many times have you heard us babble on about cardio?
We don't just say it because we like the way it sounds. After 40, cardio needs to be done every day for at least 3 0 minutes to keep your metabolism cranking. Again, just 30 minutes out of a 24 hour day. We're really not asking for much - oh, and by the way, how's your mindset? Keep cardio interesting, try new activities- do what you love, add an incline to the treadmill, listen to music, watch TV. Don't have time? Do a intense 20 minute interval workout. Push yourself, include a 15 second spurt every minute. Make every minute count and do something that motivates you. Remember our 21 day kick start? Stick to it. You'll start to see results that will make you want to do more cardio!
OK, what about the Food we Eat?
Again, I'm not going to tell you something you don't already know. Eat every three to four hours, drink lots of water, take a multivitamin, eat breakfast, watch the carbs...blah, blah, blah.
By the way, yes, we've been hearing a lot about the benefits of a glass of wine a day...but, how much wine are you actually drinking? It's recommended to keep your serving of wine to six ounces a day. More than that, and you could be adding a pound of fat a week to your body! Make sure your intake is limited to the six ounces a day. Too much, any you are at greater risk for breast cancer. Be sure to incorporate your strength exercises and aerobic activity to compensate for the glasses of Cabernet you are having.
So, why is it so difficult to stick to a healthy nutrition plan? Again, it's the mindset. Are you thinking of 40 as the new 20? Do you want to live a healthier more active lifestyle? Do you want to be around for your kids graduation, weddings and grandchildren...?
We all have the desire and motivation within ourselves to make things happen. So why, is it so hard to be motivated when it comes to our own exercise and nutrition habits? Think about it, you've got a great career, great children, great house, why not a great YOU?!?
